Cue the instrumental music. Light the candles. Grab the lavender infused oils. JOKING.
I discovered (well, Pinterest helped) a new junking trick that has my head spinning for the last hour or so. I actually feel like I have been doing magic tricks. But, in all actuality, I’ve been treating a desk to a relaxing spa treatment.
This desk and I have been at war for over a month. Stay tuned for the full upcycle story on this “fight to the finish” desk within the next week. My most current battle was peeling veneer. Again, the story is much more juicy, but I’ll save that for later. I thought I had truly won the battle with the easy-to-tear-off veneer. The pieces were coming off with no problem at all.
Until this happened. The desk fires back with another sucker punch.
Thank for, Pinterest for many fabulous articles for how to remove veneer. Here’s is where my mind was blown. It was a toss up between, “Where have you been all of my life?” and “How embarrassed should I be for not knowing already knowing this?” None the less…here is what I gathered from a quick Pinterest search.
Saturate a towel in water, unitl it is dripping, but just good and wet. Lay the wet towel over the veneer pieces giving you trouble. With a hot iron, lay it over the wet towel for several minutes, checking occasionally. Yes, I had to peek to see if I was just being fooled.
This is where this my arch-enemy desk was treated to a spa day, with a steam bath. After a few minutes of warm steam, the veneer loosened and peeled off with no problem.
….And I was going to kick this desk to the curb.
As mentioned, check back for the full story on this desk.
